When Vietnamese meets American...
Actually, in this afternoon, I "arranged a meeting" between DONUT and "XÈO" cake ^^!
I really wanted to eat these things and I decided to ask my friend come with me. She thought I was odd cause I rarely act like this (I texted, phoned and entreated like I nearly die of hunger)
I just can say one thing that these things are so delicious! You should try them (If you're Vietnamese, eat DONUT, please^^!!; If you're not, "XÈO" cake is for you)
** For someone who has never tried "XÈO" before:
It's a Vietnamese savoury pancake. Each region has its own kind of "xeo" cake but basically, it's made out of rice flour, water, coconut milk and turmeric powder (that's why "xeo" is yellow!), stuffed with slivers of fatty pork, shrimp and bean sprouts and then pan fried (in Nha Trang we usually use shrimp and cuttle - Nha Trang is a coastal city!). "Xeo" is served with many kinds of leaves (I can't name them all and it depends on each region) and a special sauce which consists of Vietnamese fish sauce, garlic, fresh chilli, sugar and lemon (optional).
The name bánh xèo is derived from the loud sizzling sound - so you can call "sizzling" cake!
Uhm... love it and Donut!!!
I eat "XEO" cake at 10 Huynh Thuc Khang St. - Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa. It's a very tidy, clean food-stall; the owner is very kind and friendly. Price: 10.000VNĐ/dish (each dish has 5 "XEO" cakes). They serve drink, too and especially there are a sink and soap! (Ordinary food-stalls don't)
